IR Blaster

Hi Folks,
I'm looking to make an IR blaster, and first looked at the Olimex ESP32 based devices, but then thought of getting a NanoPi NEO3-LTS, it has a GPIO header on it, and I see FriendlyElec have a matrix IR module that could work.
Has anyone used the GPIO pins on a Neo3 ?
I presume the case would need some surgery to get the wires in and mount the IR module ?
If I can do this and run a light OS on the RK3328 it could give me a bit more flexibility. I'm looking forward to your feedback.
